Bea Sanders/AICPA EDGE in Teaching Award (formerly the Innovation in Teaching Award)
The intent of this award is to both recognize and disseminate successful leading-edge teaching practices in the first course sequence in accounting that entice a student’s interest in accounting and encourages them to pursue the CPA profession as a career. Lesson plans include learning objectives, detailed case/activity description, and addressed AICPA Foundational Competencies Framework for Aspiring CPAs. The goal of this awards is to inspire the following:
- Excellence in accounting education
- Dynamic teaching
- Groundbreaking techniques
- Engagement in the classroom
The winner may be an individual or group of individuals.
Award Criteria
The Selection Committee will use the following as their primary criteria to judge submissions:
- Use of incorporating technology into the first-year accounting course
- Use of emerging topics such as data analytics, ESG, cybersecurity, forensic accounting, financial planning, etc. into the first-year accounting course
- Ability to entice students’ interest in accounting as a career
- Adaptability for other educational institutions or other situations
The teaching practice may not be a commercial product for which the faculty member has a financial interest.
Award Process
The pool of candidates will be selected by the AICPA’s EDGE in Teaching Awards Task Force from accepted applications that both address the above noted criteria and are specific to the first course sequence in accounting. This award will be granted once per year. Winners will be expected to present their submissions at the Conference on Teaching and Learning in Accounting (CTLA) and at the AAA Annual Meeting. The recipient will receive an award, a certificate, and a monetary prize (up to $5,000) to off-set the cost of the registration fee, travel, and hotel costs. If warranted, up to two (2) submissions could also be selected for honorable mention.
