Nearly One-Third of Senate Co-Sponsoring Mobile Workforce Bill, Thanks to Push by State CPA Societies

The number of co-sponsors in the United States Senate for S. 540, the Mobile Workforce State Income Tax Simplification Act of 2017, has climbed to 30, thanks to an on-going push by state CPA societies to secure co-sponsors for the bill.  S. 540 was introduced on March 7 by Senator John Thune (R-S.D.) and Senator Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio).

The American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) and state CPA societies are strong supporters of S. 540 because it would make it easier to comply with state personal income tax laws and greatly simplify the onerous burdens placed on employees who travel outside of their resident states for temporary periods and on employers who have corresponding withholding and reporting requirements.

During visits with their lawmakers on Capitol Hill following the AICPA Spring Meeting of Council on May 21-23, AICPA members and the state CPA societies will be reinforcing the importance of supporting the mobile workforce legislation.

In the U.S. House of Representatives, an identical bill, H.R. 1393, was approved by the House Judiciary Committee on March 22 and is awaiting a vote by the full House.
