In Profile – Rep. Bill Flores (R-Texas)

Rep. Bill Flores is currently serving his fourth term representing the 17th District of Texas.  After leaving the private sector to pursue public service in 2009, Flores was sworn into office in January of 2011.  He serves as a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.  

Flores graduated from Texas A&M in 1976 with a BBA in Accounting and earned his Texas Certified Public Accountancy (CPA) license in 1978.  He received his MBA from Houston Baptist University in 1985.  Flores began his career with a “Big 8” accounting firm and worked in the oil and gas industry for 30 years before being elected to Congress in November of 2010.

Serving alongside other allies of the profession, Flores is a member of the Congressional Caucus on CPAs and Accountants.  In a letter sent to the House Committee on Ways and Means, Flores and other members of the caucus expressed their strong support of continuing to allow small businesses and pass-through entities to use the cash basis method of accounting for tax purposes.  Flores also signed a letter to House leadership regarding the preservation of the cash method of accounting and opposing the switch to accrual accounting for partnerships, pass-through entities, personal-service companies, and farmers and ranchers.

Flores has supported numerous legislative efforts that have been favorable to the profession.  He is a co-sponsor of House Congressional Resolution 8 that calls for “providing for a joint session of Congress to receive a presentation from the Comptroller General of the United States regarding the audited financial statement of the executive branch” and has supported the Mobile Workforce State Income Tax Simplification Act, which is supported by the AICPA.
