CITP Exam
Exam Overview
The Certified Information Technology Professional (CITP ®) credential was established for CPAs with the unique ability to bridge between business and technology while meeting the strict requirements for a CPA license, as well as additional training and experience in IT assurance, risk, security and privacy, analytics and technology. In order to obtain the credential, you must pass the CITP Exam. The exam requirement is waived for candidates who have passed ISACA’s Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA®) certification exam.
Steps to the Exam
Exam Format
- Exam Type — The CITP Exam is a non-disclosed exam. This means the questions and answers are not published nor are candidates permitted to remove any exam materials from the testing site.
- Delivery Type — You may take the exam in-person at one of 300 locations nationwide, or online in a remote-proctored environment.
- Grading — Each exam is carefully graded by our team of psychometricians to ensure that the questions are statistically valid.
- Timing — The CITP Exam is a four-hour computer-based exam comprised of multiple-choice questions.
- Types of Questions: Multiple-choice questions are discrete and consist of a stem that includes factual data and provides four answer options.
Effective March 1, 2020 the CITP Exam will be offered year-round, on continuous testing basis. CITP candidates will have the flexibility to take the exam online in a remote-proctored environment or at one of 300 test center locations across North America.

Registration Process
If interested in taking the exam, register online and pay the required exam fee. Online registration is available to both AICPA and non-AICPA members. Upon registering, you will receive a confirmation of your purchase via email. This confirmation does not serve as the Notification to Schedule.

Exam Preparation Tools
The key to passing the CITP examination is a combination of using the body of knowledge referred to in the CSO, coupled with applying this body of knowledge by obtaining relevant work experience. To assist in exam preparation, the AICPA offers the following:
CITP Exam Self-study Review Course:
Closely aligned with the comprehensive outline of topics covered on the CITP Exam, the AICPA’s CITP Exam Review Course is the only CITP exam review program backed by the resources and collective expertise of accounting professionals associated with the AICPA who specialize and demonstrate specific skills, proficiency and experience in the areas that include:
- Information security and cyber risks
- Business intelligence, data management and analytics
- IT governance, risks and controls
Through illustrative examples and explanations, this CPE course makes abstract concepts come to life for both seasoned professionals and students, and it will help you understand and navigate successfully in today’s technology driven marketplace.
CITP Learning Pathway
The CITP Learning Pathway is a three-part education series covering the comprehensive CITP credential body of knowledge. Aligned with the CITP credential body of knowledge, the CITP Learning Pathway is comprised of the following three modules:
- Information Security & Cyber Risk (Module 1)
This learning provides extensive coverage of subject matter from the Information Security & Cyber Risks module of the CITP credential body of knowledge, which accounts for 40% of the subject matter covered on the CITP Exam. Leverage this learning to acquire the essential skills and competencies in the following areas, in preparation for the CITP Exam:- Information security governance
- Cybersecurity risk management
- SOC for cybersecurity
- Business Intelligence, Data Management & Analytics (Module 2)
This learning provides extensive coverage of subject matter from the Business Intelligence, Data Management & Analytics module of the CITP credential body of knowledge, which accounts for 20% of the subject matter covered on the CITP Exam. Leverage this learning to acquire essential skills and competencies in the following areas, in preparation for the CITP Exam:- Data management
- Data analysis & reporting
- Business intelligence management
- IT Governance, Risks & Controls (Module 3)
This learning provides extensive coverage of subject matter from the IT Governance, Risks & Controls module of the CITP credential body of knowledge, which accounts for 40% of the subject matter covered on the CITP Exam. Leverage this learning to acquire essential skills and competencies in the following areas, in preparation for the CITP Exam:- IT governance & strategy
- IT risks, process & controls
- System and Organization Controls (SOC) Reporting
CITP credential candidates can leverage the CITP Learning Pathway Bundle to acquire the skills and essential competencies in each of the core areas of the CITP discipline. Included in the bundle are the education resources for each of the three CITP credential body of knowledge modules above, in addition to a complimentary CITP Exam, which can be taken upon completion of all three modules.
Scheduling Process
After receiving your (NTS) email, you may schedule your exam. Please schedule early to improve your likelihood of obtaining your desired time and location. The NTS email will provide instructions on how to do so. Below is a snapshot of the process for in-person or online testing:
- Visit the CITP Exam Scheduling Website.
- Follow the steps to establish a test-taker account. If you have already established a test -taker account for a previous exam, use the username and password that was previously provided. For assistance with your username or password, please contact the AICPA Member Service at 888.777.7077 or email us.
- Upon receipt of email confirmation of your username and password, login to schedule.
- Click on the Schedule Exam link in the task bar at the top of the page.
- Select the CITP Exam for onsite proctored and click on Register Now button.
- Select the desired HOST location (testing center).
- Select the desired date and time the desired location is available and proceed to checkout.
- Enter the voucher code that was provided in the NTS letter at checkout and click submit and done.
- A scheduling confirmation email will be sent to the email address provided. It is important to print and/or keep a copy of this confirmation page on file as it includes the Test Authorization Code required for exam admittance.
- Visit the CITP Exam Scheduling Website.
- Follow the steps to establish a test-taker account. If you have already established a test -taker account for a previous exam, use the username and password that was previously provided. For assistance with your username or password, please contact the AICPA Member Service at 888.777.7077 or email us.
- Upon receipt of email confirmation of your username and password, login to Webassessor on the computer you will use to take your exam and download the Sentinel security program, take your photo, and set your personal keystrokes for test taker validation.
- Click on the Schedule Exam link in the task bar at the top of the page.
- Select the appropriate CITP exam for “online proctored” and click on Register Now button
- Select the desired date and time that an online proctor is available and proceed to checkout.
- Enter the voucher code that was provided in the NTS letter at checkout and click submit and done.
- A scheduling confirmation email will be sent to the email address provided. You are not required to print a copy of this confirmation page for online examination.
Testing Locations
