The employment interview plays a very important role in the candidate selection process. Structured interviews using behaviorally based questions are the most commonly used and effective selection technique. Targeted questions, not hypotheticals, help you gain an understanding of what a person has done – e.g. “Tell me about a difficult client situation you have had to deal with” – will give you greater information and insight than asking “Can you deal with difficult clients?”. This resource:

  • Defines key behaviors for CPA firms

  • Divides the behaviors among the roles in the firm

  • Assigns multiple questions to each behavior

Use these questions by firm role to focus on a specific set of behaviors to find people that match the firm’s culture and values.
